My Favorite Teacher - Essay Winner

Shelby, a 6th grade student at Jackson Heights, recently wrote an essay for Barnes and Noble’s My Favorite Teacher contest.  Shelby wrote about her 3rd grade teacher, Mrs. Easum, from Royal Valley Elementary.  Shelby wrote the winning essay in the local contest for grades 6 – 8.  Shelby received a certificate of appreciation and Mrs. Easum received a certificate as well as a set of books for her classroom.  Shelby’s essay will now move on to the Regional Contest for a chance to win Mrs. Easum a Nook and a $500 gift card to Barnes and Noble.  Congrats to both of them.

Shelby's Essay:
                 My Favorite Teacher
Mrs.Easum was by far one of the best teachers I’ve ever had. She made everything in third grade fun. I was scared when I first moved to Royal Valley because I had just moved from Texas to Kansas. She helped me make some great friends. Sometimes when I didn’t know or understand something she would help me and explain how and why that would be the answer. Mrs.Easum was the best.

Mrs.Easum wouldn’t just make us do worksheets, she made it fun. For example we would sing a song to learn our multiplication facts. Every day she would make us want to come to school. At that time it seemed as if every day was a mystery, some days we’d read other days we’d try to figure out how many marshmallows were in the jar. Mrs.Easum made school a fun place, and learning even more fun.

When I first moved to Royal Valley I was scared and didn’t know what to expect at new school in a new state. Mrs.Easum helped me get over my fear. I was nervous. She made me feel special, since I was new. What I’ve experienced is her classroom was always welcoming and inviting. Mrs.Easum helped me get through a tough time.
When we didn’t get how to spell a word like friend, she would say, “Friday is at the end of the week,” or “we’re friends to the end.” Just simple stuff to help us remember. Not only did she help us with spelling, she would also help us if we didn’t know a word. “Sound it out,” she would say. Mrs.Easum was a very helpful teacher.

Mrs.Easum was one of the best teachers I’ve ever had. She was nice, kind, helpful, fun, and caring. What more could you have in a teacher! The first day of school can be scary, but Mrs.Easum got me through that fear. She’s a teacher that understands. At the time she made me feel like I could be anything I wanted to be. She was the kind of teacher who would make a student read part of the book she was reading to the class because she was about to cry. Mrs.Easum was the best, and only, third grade teacher I’ve ever had.
